When I power cycle my X100, after rebooting the Logitech Media Server starts scanning and never stops. I did this yesterday evening because I was having ripping problems again, and today, after 15 hours it was still scanning, necessitating a manual intervention to stop it. What could be wrong?

It's the background version, you can stop it and do it manually, you do not have to rely on that feature.
Just play your music unless you can't see what you have ripped.

0. Click progress & abort & go back to number 1
1. Settings/Basic Settings/"Rescan Media Lib"
2. Select from drop down, & just click rescan
3. Done

You can add more directories via "Media Folders" too if you like eg from NAS or HDD drives
You can config it but if you aren't sure just follow the steps above.

If you do not have many albums like 300+, then do a fresh scan, if you like ?
View scaning progress, abort and "clear & rescan".
You do not need to wait, it is mainly a background scanning, you can remove the plugin but the system also has a built-in plugin.
Normally by the time you access from an app or web-Gui the albums would already be updated.
