This seems like a daft question , but I'll ask it anyway.
If I buy high fidelity music tracks (Say 24 bit) and download them to a USB stick on my desktop PC and later upload the tracks to my X10, does my PC 's sound card need to be 24 bit compatible ?

You just need a software (player) that can play the files ... :)
