Can I play music simultaneously through my connected bookshelf speakers AND a Sonos Play 1 located elsewhere in the house? I have a Sonos Bridge connected to the Home router.

Im sure you can since the sonos is just browsing/playing from a server (cocktailaudio or any NAS), it doesn't really matter.
Some devices can have more than one servers, hence it is possible, but the logic is in the setup.

Thanks for the suggestion. It seems that whilst the x10 and Sonos are connected to my Home Hub, Sonos sets up it's own mini network. I can play music through the attache speakers OR in the other room via the Sonos Play 1 but can;t set up to do both. I could get a Sonos Connect perhaps to connect the X10 to or a Sonos Play 5 to replace my bookshelf speakers.

If I did the latter, could I connect my TV to obtain better sound? I have Virginmedia TiVo.

As it's the sonos bridge that creates it's own wireless network, which you no longer have to use. http://blog.sonos.com/news/introducing-an-even-simpler-sonos/
have you tried connecting to your existing wireless router? As this may solve your problem without buying any more kit.
